Großer Inselsberg

With its 916 m above sea level, the Great Inselsberg is the highest elevation of the western Thuringian Forest, visible from afar. The unique distant view, which in clear weather reaches as far as the Wasserkuppe in the Rhön and the Brocken in the Harz, makes it a popular excursion and hiking destination. The approx. 148 hectare terrain around the mountain plateau is now a beautiful landscape conservation area. The most famous hiking trail in Thuringia runs directly over the hilltop: the Rennsteig. It originally formed the border between the principality of Saxony-Gotha-Coburg and Prussia. From the 21-metre-high observation tower, visitors can enjoy a 360° panoramic view. On the lower floors, a section of the original transmission technology of the former telecommunications tower is on display. The tower is also an extraordinary climbing location: on the outer facade there is a 17-metre high climbing wall with a climbing machine as an ideal "climbing partner". A three-meter-high bouldering wall is available for beginners and children.
